Some people, who I call Focused, go on as if on a mission. They don't spend time observing things around them, with the exception of things which interact directly with their senses. They are focused on something or maybe some small group of people with them, nothing else matters. If an alien walked down the street, they would not notice, except if others were to scream out. They are in their own world. Do they do this to control and simplify their lives by limiting input, not looking around to see what is going on? Maybe they are afraid of what they might see so they don't look?
Some other people, who I call aware, break out of their own activity on a frequent basis to observe new things going on around them. They scan their surroundings with sight and loosen their hearing to accept all the sounds around themselves, looking for something. What do they look for? Maybe something familiar, people they might know, or some danger? Maybe they are just paranoid of something sneaking up on them unaware?
I would think most people fall somewhere in the middle of the two, or have focus sometimes and are aware at other times, depending on the situation. On occasion I have seen someone I recognized, usually in a store, and been quite close to them for a long time. Being shy I don't say anything, waiting for eye contact first, letting mutual recognition break the ice first. But the eye contact never comes, they are going about their business and never once look around to see who is nearby. I've also tested this with some, and gotten closer and closer to them until they are forced to sense me, usually they are startled, as if woken from a dream.
Sometimes I look around and nobody notices me. Am I invisible? Or are they blind? But usually there is someone else who notices me looking at them, and sometimes I see in their eyes that they are glad to not be invisible today either.
